Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum (月桂冠大倉記念館)
Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum is a corporate museum of the sake manufacturer Gekkeikan Sake Co., Ltd. located in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture.
Summary
The museum which is themed around sake brewing and Gekkeikan was opened on the company's 350th anniversary in 1987 in a renovated sake brewery (built in 1909) on the bank of Hori-kawa River.
The observation route is designed according to the order of the sake brewing process, and a wide range of items owned by the museum are permanently exhibited, including 400 brewing tools selected from 6,120 items designated by Kyoto City as Tangible Folk Cultural Properties, the tools used for shipping such as branding irons, red woodcut seals, copper plates and molds, as well as the tools used to make barrels.
Heritage of Industrial Modernization
Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum (built in 1909) and the museum-owned 'Fushimi sake brewing tools' are certified Heritage of Industrial Modernization as "Heritage of Sake Brewing in Fushimi" together with the 'Uchigura Brewery' (built in 1906), the 'Gekkeikan Old Head Office' (built in 1919), the 'Gekkeikan Showagura Brewery ' (built in 1927), the 'Old Okura Brewing Research Institute' (built in 1909), as well as the Matsumoto Sake Brewing Co., Ltd. and Fushimi jikkoku-bune ship (Old Freighter).
