Gengai (玄愷)
Gengai was a priest of Todai-ji Temple in the Nara period.
A priest of Hossoshu sect
Summary
In August 752, he became Shokyoshi for Hossho sect section of Todai-ji Temple, and then Ina (priest in charge of personnel affairs in a temple) and finally Daihoshi (the highest rank of priest). During the Jingo Keiun era (767 -770), he was the manager of Todai-ji Temple and concurrently served as Daigakunokami Daihoshi (Director of the Bureau of Education, Daihoshi).
