Shibata Kamon (柴田家門)

Kamon SHIBATA (February 6, 1863 - August 25, 1919) is a statesman who served as Education Minister, a member of the House of Peers, and so on.

Career

He was born to Eisuke SHIBATA as the first son at Heian-inishie in the castle town of Hagi (present Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture). Giichi TANAKA and Kotsuchi FUJII were from the same province.

In 1882, he came up to Tokyo and enrolled at Daigakuyobimon (Daiichi Koto Chugakko (First High School), The present University of Tokyo, Faculty of Liberal Arts) before advancing to the law school of Tokyo University (The present faculty of law at Tokyo University).

After graduation from the university in 1890, he served as Secretary of the Cabinet, Counsellor of Cabinet Legislation Bureau and a consultation officer for a public administrative court.

He was appointed to the chief of Bureau of Areas at Ministry of Home Affairs in the second Yamagata cabinet in 1898.

In 1901, he assumed the position of Secretary of the Cabinet for the First Katsura Cabinet.

In 1903, he became a member of the House of Peers by a compilation by Imperial command.

In 1908, he assumed the position of Secretary of the Cabinet for the Second Katsura Cabinet.

In 1911, he concurrently served as the president of Takushoku-kyoku (Bureau of Reclamation and Colonization).

In 1912, he assumed the position of Education Minister for the Third Katsura Cabinet. After leaving the cabinet position, he served as a member of the House of Peers and also as a member of the temporary Education Commission.

He died in 1919. His graveyard is in Aoyama cemetery in Minato Ward, Tokyo.
