Tani Morishige (谷衛滋)

Morishige TANI (March 19, 1817 - April 6, 1875) was a daimyo (Japanese feudal lord) in Edo era. He was the 13th (the last) lord of Yamaga Domain, Tanba Province. His official court rank was Jugoinoge (Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade), Daizen no suke (the title of a person who was in charge of meals in the court).

Biography

He was the fifth son of Yorihisa MATSUDAIRA, the lord of Hitachifuchu Domain. He became the adoptive heir and took over as head of the family, as Morinori TANI, the lord of domain, died in 1855. At Meiji Restoration, he showed deference to Sanindo Chinbugun (a military unit formed specially for the campaign in Sanindo) led by Kinmochi SAIONJI. He became governor of domain in the return of lands and people to the emperor in 1869, and dismissed from office because of Haihan-chiken (abolition of feudal domains and establishment of prefectures) in 1871.

He died in April 6, 1875, at the age of 59.

Family

His lawful wife was a daughter of Moriyasu TANI (adopted daughter of Morinori). His children include the eledest son, Toshie TANI, and three daughters, adopted daughter of Chiyu SHIMA, a wife of certain Yamaguchi and a wife of certain Honda.
