Matsuoka Shinpei (松岡心平)
Shinpei MATSUOKA (October 29, 1954-) is a Japanese scholar of Noh. He is a professor of the University of Tokyo. He was born in Okayama Prefecture.
His father was the president of Sanyo Shimbun (newspaper publishing company in Okayama Prefecture). He tried to enroll in the faculty of law at university following his father's wish.
However, when he was 20 years old he watched the Shimai (Noh dance in plain cloths) called 'Fujito' performed by Hisao KANZE and was shocked by 'the stage in which as if the hell was surging.'
Then, he decided to go into the study of Noh.
Meanwhile, he joins the management of 'Hashi no kai' (a private research and performance group of Noh), and is engaged in the practical activities such as restoring and performing haikyoku (a Noh song no longer performed).

1978: Graduated from the University of Tokyo
1984: Completed the doctoral program without a doctoral degree of doctoral program in Japanese language and literature, Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology, University of Tokyo
1987: Full-time lecturer at the Faculty of Letters, University of Tokyo
1990: Assistant professor at the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Tokyo
2001: Professor at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, University of Tokyo
