Tachibana no Norinaga (橘則長)

TACHIBANA no Norinaga (982 - 1034) was a kajin (waka (a traditional Japanese poem of thirty-one syllables) poet) of the mid-Heian period. He was the child of TACHIBANA no Norimitsu.

His mother was Sei Shonagon. He had TACHIBANA no Suemichi and Mitsutomo as his siblings.

Biography

Once he became the shinshi (Daigaku student who passed a subject of the official appointment test) at Daigaku-ryo (Bureau of Education under the ritsuryo system), he consecutively held positions of Kurodo (Chamberlain), Zusho Gon no suke (book officer), and civil government officer. He left Shuri no suke (assistant officer of the Office of Palace Repairs) and Shikibu no jo (Secretary of the Ministry of Ceremonial) positions for the post of Ecchu no kami (Governor of Ecchu Province) and passed away at the province he was reassigned to.

His poems were collected within "Goshui Wakashu" (Later Gleanings of Japanese Poems), "Shokushika wakashu" (Collection of Verbal Flowers and Waka) and left his name as the poet. He was married to a famous kajin, one of the Noin Sisters, and a child, Norisue, was born between them at that time. It was said that the Noinbon (type of transcription of Noin) of "Makura no soshi" (The Pillow Book) derived from this relationship.
